The Haan Museum of Indiana Art is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit — and it runs on volunteer power. Our volunteer community includes retired educators, working professionals, students, artists, and lifelong museum lovers who give their time because they believe in what the Haan is doing and want to be part of it.

Volunteering at the Haan is not just a contribution — it is an experience. You spend time in one of the most extraordinary buildings in Indiana, surrounded by exceptional art and the stories of the people who made it. You meet visitors from across the country and around the world. And you become part of a community of people who care deeply about Indiana's cultural heritage.

Volunteer Opportunities

Docent

Docents are the heart of the visitor experience at the Haan. After completing docent training — which covers the museum's history, collections, and interpretive approach — docents greet visitors, lead tours, answer questions, and share the stories behind the art, the mansion, and the remarkable people who built both. No prior art history background is required; curiosity, warmth, and a genuine interest in people and stories are the most important qualifications.

Sculpture Garden and Grounds

A dedicated team of volunteer gardeners maintains the Haan's five-acre grounds, including the 0.2-mile sculpture garden path and the plantings around the 27 sculptures by Indiana artists. This is hands-on, outdoor work that makes a visible difference — and the garden team is among the most tight-knit volunteer communities at the museum.

Education Program Support

Volunteers who enjoy working with children and young people can assist with K-12 field trips, the STEAM summer camp, and other education programs. Education volunteers help manage student groups, assist with hands-on activities, and support the museum's teaching artists and educators.

Event Support

From opening receptions to Lunch & Learn events and community outreach programs, the Haan's events rely on volunteers to welcome guests, manage logistics, and ensure every visitor has a great experience. Event volunteering is flexible and a great way to be involved without a regular weekly commitment.

College Student Volunteers — Purdue and Area College Community

College students are particularly welcome in our volunteer community. Volunteering at the Haan offers resume-building experience in nonprofit management, museum operations, education, and community engagement — and it looks distinctive on any application. We are actively seeking student volunteers for docent training, education support, and event assistance. Contact us to learn about current openings and how to get started.
