Sculpture Garden
The Haan Sculpture Garden is one of the most distinctive free outdoor art destinations in central Indiana. Located just behind the historic mansion, the garden features a 0.2-mile wheelchair-accessible path winding among 27 original works by some of Indiana's finest sculptors — from monumental bronze figures to carved Zimbabwean serpentine stone, steel, fused glass, and ceramic.
The five-acre grounds also include a rustic nature trail through three acres of wooded terrain, an outdoor theater stage and picnic areas.. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning neighbor, the garden offers something new every season with the array of native blooms.

Set on five acres near downtown Lafayette, the Haan’s outdoor spaces are open to the public daily for free.
Sculpture Garden Trail
The heart of the grounds: a 0.2-mile paved, wheelchair-accessible loop behind the mansion featuring 27 sculptures by Indiana artists. The path is flat, shaded in sections, and suitable for all ages and abilities. Begin to your right at the entrance and proceed counterclockwise to encounter each work in numbered order. The garden also features an outdoor theater stage — used for performances and special events — and a generous lawn perfect for picnicking.
Nature Trail
A rustic trail winds through three acres of wooded terrain behind the sculpture garden, descending to Valley Street before looping back to the hilltop. Interpretive signs identify 30 native Indiana tree species along the route, plus information on non-native and invasive species, tree fruits, and woodland ecology.
Please note: This is a challenging trail with rocks, inclines, and narrow paths that may become slippery in wet conditions. Hike with a companion and avoid entering after dark.
Outdoor Theater & Picnic Area
The Sculpture Garden includes a dedicated outdoor stage made possible through the City of Lafayette and individual donors. The stage hosts performances and community events throughout the year. The surrounding lawn provides ample space for picnicking. The garden is maintained year-round by a dedicated team of volunteer gardeners, with support from the Indiana Office of Tourism Development and the Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette.
Safari Adventure for Kids
Animal sculptures are placed along the trail, partially hidden among the landscaping plants. Children can hunt for each creature as they walk the path — a built-in safari adventure that makes art discovery fun for even the youngest visitors.

Grounds Rules
General Rules
- No smoking, vaping, tobacco products, or illegal drugs anywhere on Museum grounds
- Shirts and shoes required at all times
- Carry in/ carry out park
- No skateboards or motorized scooters
- No firearms or weapons unless part of an exhibit or permitted under Indiana state law
- Anyone intentionally damaging Museum property may be subject to removal, arrest, or legal action
- Leashed dogs are welcome on the grounds and in the Sculpture Garden — please clean up after your pet
Nature Trail Safety
- This is a physically challenging trail — rocks, steep inclines, and narrow passages are present
- Do not hike alone
- Do not enter the trail after dark
- Wet or rainy conditions may make surfaces slippery or muddy — proceed with caution
- Visitors proceed at their own risk
