SUMMARY:Celebrating Black Culture: Featuring Works by Bing Davis & Peter Rujuwa
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is on the 2nd floor of the Haan Museum\, and is included in general admission when you take a self-guided tour of the museum. Peter Rujuwa also has several larger works represented in the permanent collection of the Haan Sculpture Garden behind the museum. \nAbout the Artists\nWillis “Bing” Davis grew up in a neighborhood where there was a sense of community\, where everyone knew who you were\, and where great role models made a positive impact on the lives of its residents.  While embracing his African-American heritage and culture\, Davis creates thought provoking artwork that interweaves native patterns and fabrics and gives a new voice to found objects.  Ceramic Ancestral Spirit Vases\, masks\, paintings and many other ceramic pieces showcase the talent and versatility of this prolific artist.  Through his art\, he inspires the viewer to explore their human potential and greatness. \nPeter Rujuwa creates sculptures from serpentine stone\, a traditional art of his tribe\, the Shona people of Zimbabwe. He has been sculpting since the age of six\, when he and his friends would make their own carved toys using soapstone\, which was abundant in the mountains surrounding his village. Their improvised chisels were dry sticks split in half\, and rough stones became files. Today\, Rujuwa is based in Indianapolis\, and sells his work throughout the US and internationally.
